Laser Hair Removal Q & A

How long does laser hair removal last?

While no hair removal system is completely permanent, having your hair removed using laser technology gives you smooth, even results that can last for six months to a year or for many patients up to many years. Laser hair removal with Cutera XEO® is more effective and longer lasting than hair removal techniques, such as shaving, waxing, depilatories, and electrolysis.

How does laser hair removal work?

When you have a laser hair removal session, pulses of energy are targeted at the follicles of the hair you want to remove. Pigment in the follicles absorbs the energy. This damages the follicle, causing the hair to fall out. The damaged follicle can’t produce future hair again.

The XEO Laser Hair Removal system can remove all textures of hair, from fine to coarse. Small areas, such as the mustache area, can be treated in just a few minutes. Larger areas, depending on the patient, will take longer.

Laser hair removal is a safe, effective treatment for your:

  • Abdomen
  • Arms
  • Back
  • Bikini area
  • Chin
  • Legs
  • Feet and toes
  • Mustache area
  • Underarms

After your treatment, your skin may be pink and tender for a day or two. The sensation may be similar to that of a sunburn. Makeup can be applied the same day. The hair in the treatment area will fall out over the next 2 weeks.

Generally, you’ll need four to six treatments (occassionally up to eight) spaced out every 6-12 weeks for effective hair removal. However, the number of treatments varies according to each patient.

Is laser hair removal right for me?

Dr. Jane Smith will conduct a consultation to evaluate you and determine your candidacy for this effective procedure.

People with blond or gray hair may not respond well to laser hair removal because there may not be enough pigment for the laser to target. Laser hair removal tends to work best for people who have light skin with dark hair. However, adjustments can be made to the laser’s settings to treat people who don’t have enough contrast between their skin and hair.
