Dr. Jane Smith was born in New Haven Connecticut, the daughter of a
Physician-father and a stay-at-home mother. She was raised to be a
conscientious, hard-working doctor and a caring, kind, empathetic person. By
age eight, she knew she wanted to be a doctor and worked hard throughout her
grade school and high school years with that goal in mind.
She became a Tar Heel in 1981, coming to the University of North
Carolina to do her residency in Internal Medicine. She completed her training
in 1984. She received two awards as a resident - the "I care" Award for the
most caring senior resident and the Outstanding Teaching Resident Award. She
has carried this love of teaching and care of people with her throughout her
career.
She worked for two years at the Medical Clinic at Wake Med in Raleigh, NC caring
for indigent patients in a primary care setting. She then joined a private
practice in Internal Medicine, Raleigh Internal Medicine, which became Cardinal
Healthcare, a large, multidisciplinary group. She dedicated the next 13 years to
providing high quality primary care to a practice of over 5,000 patients. She
loved the diversity of the practice of Internal Medicine, providing care to her
patients as outpatients and when they required hospitalization. She treasured
the relationships she developed with her patients and enjoyed seeing them grow
through the various stages of their lives. As the insurance forces began to
dictate the time spent with patients, she felt she could no longer provide the
quality of care she promised to her patients. Thus in 1999, she resigned from
private practice in Internal Medicine. Soon thereafter, she was approached to
open a new vein clinic in Raleigh, NC for Vein Clinics of America, a national
organization devoted solely to the practice of vein disease. What began as a
temporary position grew into a new passion and career path. She elected to work
with VCA because of their superior training program and their cutting-edge
approach to the investigation and treatment of vein disease. Always committed
to her patients, always aiming to offer the highest quality medical care, she
approached this new field with energy, enthusiasm, and passion.
In the summer of 2003, she realized her dream: opening her own office offering a
commitment to excellence in the care of patients with all types of vein
problems, while providing the extra TLC so wanting in medicine. She and her
friend and business partner, Joy Shaker, an experienced ultrasound
technologist, have worked hard to develop an office that functions as a TEAM
reflecting their commitment to treat each patient as a special person with a
unique problem.
Dr. Smith is the proud mother of four children, as well as two dogs and two
cats.
